ew things are as
devastating as dealing with cancer, in ourselves or someone we love. The courage, dignity
and spirit of those fighting this disease is both inspirational and humbling. In
1985, an American Cancer Society volunteer, Dr. Gordon Klatt, put on his jogging gear and
headed out the door. Twenty-four hours and 81 miles later, Dr. Klatt had raised $27,000 in
sponsored donations for the American Cancer Society.
Since Dr. Klatt's one-man marathon, thousands of people nationwide have passed the
"baton" and raised millions of dollars for Relay For Life's battle against
cancer. In 1996-97, 1,656 Relay events generated $60 million. The number of events and
participants grow every year and the American Cancer Society has set a goal of $100
million in the year 2000.
You can make a difference, now and in the future. Join in your community's fight
against cancer. It may be the most important thing you'll ever do.
