Sample Letter #1 (Target Audience: prospective donors) Dear __________: Do you know what you will be doing on the weekend of August 3-4th? Well, I know what I'll be doing! I will be donating 18 hours of my time in the fight against cancer by participating in the 1999 American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, held in Marshfield at the Junior High School Track Area. The Relay for Life is the National Signature Event for the American Cancer Society. The event is an 18 hour celebration of life in honor and in memory of those people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Our goal is to keep at least one member from each participating team walking or jogging around the track for the duration of the event. Money raised will be used for education and services to cancer patients and their families in throughout the north Wood County area and will support research grants funded by the American Cancer Society. Some examples of these programs and services available in our area include Reach to Recovery, the Loan & Gift Closet, Look Good...Feel Better, and the Great American Smoekout. I need your support! Your tax deductible donation of $25.00 or more will help bring us closer to our goal of finding a cure for cancer in the near future. The investment is yours to make. If you have any questions or if you would like to attend this year's Relay for Life, please call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx. Please send the bottom portion of this letter along with any contribution you care to make. I thank you in advance for your generous support! Sample Letter #2 (Target Audience: new team members / potential team members & captains) Dear __________: The Relay for Life is a fantastic event with a very important mission: to take up the fight against cancer as a community. We set out to accomplish this mission through the objectives of fund raising and community education at the relay. Relay for Life is the largest single fundraising event in our country. The funds raised at our event stay in our community in the form of dollars for research and programs for cancer patients and their loved ones. So what's in it for you? It's a wonderful opportunity to do a great deed and have a great time doing it. It is difficult to describe a relay to someone who has not attended one before. Without exaggerating, the Relay for Life experience is transforming! It's about being a community that takes up the fight. Special bonds are formed and folks come back year after year. The event is made up of teams of people who raise funds prior to the event and then come to the relay to celebrate their accomplishments and show support of the fight against cancer. At the relay, team members take turns walking the track in a true "relay" fashion. Teams stake out a campsite and enjoy many events scheduled throughout the 18-hour event. "The Relay for Life isn't only about raising money, it's much more than that. It's about compassion and hope." We would like to invite you to learn more about the Relay for Life. Presentations can be given to any group with the assistance of video and printed resources. Let us know how we can help you recruit a team of friends, family, or co-workers. The Marshfield Relay for Life will be held on Friday-Saturday, August 3-4th, 2001 at the Marshfield Junior High School Track. Many Thanks,
