2003
Relay for Life Team Totals...another wonderful effort: $138,792.22 !
(Only $7,000 worth of expenses were incurred: that's a 95% rate of efficiency)
Hot sun, a little rain, and many warm hearts prevailed at Marshfield's 10th annual
Relay for Life, as a
safe, wonderful, and successful event was held on Aug. 1-2, 2003. This year's
Relay for Life continued
the incredible accomplishments made only through the efforts of the dedicated Team
Captains,
Committee Volunteers, and Community Support. Each year brings renewed hope
that with
each passing Relay, our community's belief of a cure for cancer comes a little
closer to reality.

Team Captains' Job Description
1) Contact chair Corinne Johnson, tel
(715)676-2549, and get the Team Captain's Packet, which is loaded with everything you need
to get your team started.
2) Recruit at least nine other people to be on
your team and provide a participant's packet to each person.
3) Meet with your team members to challenge
them and provide incentives to promote competition. Set a team fundraising goal of
at least $1,000. Will your team dedicate its efforts to someone who has or has had
cancer? Perhaps your team can be sponsored by a business, community organization, or
church group.
4) Distinguish your team with a team name and
theme, campsite decorations, signs, and other ways to provide a spirited experience for
all. Be sure to celebrate your team's accomplishments.
5) Turn in your team roster and registration
fee in order to get T-shirts, food, etc. (The T-shirts are actually ordered several
weeks earlier during a Relay for Life committee meeting.)
6) Check each team members progress toward his
or her goal. Meet often with your team to recognize successes and promote tea
spirit. Learn from each other's fundraising successes.
7) Let everyone know what to bring to the
event. Secure your campsite. Have fun!!
Great Fundraising Ideas
Auctions
Ask for a donation of goods or services to be auctioned off at work. Suggest unique
or personal things, such as works of art, a cocktail cruise on someone's boat or pontoon,
dinner for six at someone's home, dessert every month for a year, etc. Display the
item (or their descriptions) and hold the auction over lunch hour or at some other
convenient time.
Garage Sales
Give all or part of the proceeds from your garage sale to the Relay for Life. Or,
get your company to hold a sale for no longer needed items like furniture, computers,
printers, office supplies, etc.
Donation of Sales
Encourage your company to set aside a percentage of sales made during a certain time
period. Example--$5.00 from each oil change performed on each Monday in the month of
June would be donated to the Relay for Life.
Freddie the Flamingo
An eight year old boy in Mississippi put "Freddies" in peoples' yards with a
note around his neck asking for a donation for the Relay for Life. I you give a
donation, "Freddie" will "fly off" to another yard. This
youngster raised more than $6,000 !
Casual Day
Employees pay $5.00 to dress in casual attire.
Bake Sale
Employees bring scrumptious homemade pies, cookies, and brownies to be either sold or
eaten at work, with the proceeds being marked for the Relay for Life.
Candy Counting Contest
Have people give a donation to guess the number of jellybeans, M & Ms, or Life Savers
in a big jar. This concept is easy to administer and is great for setting out in a
lobby or other central area. A prize in offered to the winner at the end of the
contest.
Aquarium Quarter Drop
A fish aquarium, filled with water and containing only an empty shot glass, is placed in a
central location, such as a lobby or cafeteria. People are encouraged to try and drop
quarters into the shot glass. A successful "drop" results in a small prize
(candy bar, etc.) This game is especially popular with children. All quarters are
then collected and used to pay for a Relay team's entry fee.
Reserved Parking
Auction off the use of "premium" parking spots for a week, month, or
even full year.
Baby Photo Contest
Employees bring in baby photos of themselves. Each person pays $1.00 to guess who
the babies might be. The person with the most correct answers wins a prize.
Vending Machines
Raise the cost of your company vending machines by $0.10 per item for a month.
Potluck
Office volunteers bring in a potluck breakfast or lunch. Charge $5.00 for an
all-you-care-to-eat home cooked meal.
Change Jar
Ask employees to drop their spare change into a specially designated jar. Have
departments compete to see who can fill their jars with coins first.
Pizza Sale
Ask your company to purchase pizzas; prepare and sell them off at $1.00 per slice and
donate the proceeds.
Pie Tossing Contest
Ask managers to participate in a pie tossing contest. Participants pay $5.00 for the
opportunity to toss pies at their supervisors (and not get reprimanded!)
Yellow Ribbon Sale
For $1.00, employees can purchase a yellow ribbon in honor of a friend or loved one who
has had or is presently fighting cancer. Create your own wall to list the names of
these people.

What Cancer
Can't Do
Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shelter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendships.
It cannot shutout memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot invade the soul.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the spirit.
It cannot lessen the power of resurrection.
Bank Night:
Bank Night is an opportunity to turn in team money that has been collected, and to
pick up T-Shirts. This will relieve some congestion under the Registration Tent at
the Relay. And it's easier on everyone if most of the "paperwork" is taken
care of ahead of time. That leaves more time for enjoyment at the Relay! Of
course, anyone who can't attend Bank Night, may turn in your Team money at the Relay, just
as in previous years.
